International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: MDP Highlights Achievements and Calls for Continued Progress

Male’, Maldives – June 24, 2024 – As we approach the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) takes pride in its pivotal role in addressing the country’s drug problem and setting the agenda for future action.

The global theme for this year’s World Drug Day campaign, “Invest in Prevention,” resonates deeply with the MDP’s commitment to combating drug abuse through evidence-based strategies and community empowerment. This year’s campaign emphasizes the crucial role of prevention in mitigating the harmful effects of substance abuse and underscores the need for proactive measures to protect individuals and communities.

Under the collective efforts of the MDP government and the people of Maldives, progressive measures have been implemented to combat drug abuse. Focusing on evidence-based strategies and comprehensive reforms, one of the hallmark achievements includes moving from a punitive approach to a public health approach. The restructuring and strengthening of the National Drug Agency (NDA) is a testament to our shared commitment to ensuring a more efficient and integrated approach to tackling substance use issues across the country.

The MDP government has steadfastly prioritized prevention, treatment, and community empowerment. Our policies are rooted in the importance of scientific research, human rights, and international cooperation, all of which aim to create a society where individuals can overcome addiction and lead productive lives.

Key achievements during the MDP government include:

Structural Reforms and Enhanced Services: The transfer of the NDA to the Ministry of Health streamlined operations and enhanced service delivery, marking a significant step towards a more responsive approach. Initiatives like establishing specialized treatment centers and community-based rehabilitation programs expanded across the country, giving better access to essential care and services.

Capacity Building and Training: The MDP government prioritized the professional development of healthcare providers and social workers through comprehensive training programs. These efforts have equipped local professionals with the skills and knowledge to deliver evidence-based treatments and support services effectively.

Policy and Legislative Advances: Collaborative efforts resulted in formulating and implementing progressive drug policies aimed at reducing demand, preventing trafficking, and promoting harm reduction strategies. In addition, Legislative reforms were conducted to strengthen enforcement mechanisms while safeguarding human rights and promoting public health. A well-researched amendment was drafted to the Drug Act to achieve this.

International Collaboration: The MDP government has actively engaged with international partners, including UN agencies, to foster knowledge exchange and receive technical assistance. These collaborations have significantly enhanced the Maldives’ capacity to implement the best drug prevention, treatment, and supply reduction practices.

On this occasion of World Drug Day, the MDP calls for sustained efforts and international cooperation to address the multifaceted challenges posed by drug issues. By investing in prevention, supporting treatment initiatives, and empowering communities, the Maldives will continue to build a society where individuals are supported in their journey towards recovery and well-being.
We’d like to ask the government to carry forward and implement the strategic action plan that the MDP government developed to achieve the National Drug Policy and prioritize their work to implement the Drug Act. The government must also form the National Drug Control Council and continue the efforts that we have developed for the betterment of Maldives.
