The Maldivian Democratic Party is alarmed about President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning nationals from certain countries. While it is the imperative of sovereign nations to establish their own immigration controls, the MDP expresses concern over its discriminatory nature and the effects on some of the most vulnerable communities in our society – refugees. The MDP also recognises the importance of strong border controls and countering terrorism, but believes the promotion of democratic values and international cooperation to be of more benefit in the fight against violent extremism.
Nations battling authoritarianism across the world look up to the United States for its values of tolerance, and diversity. The MDP reminds the United States of its founding values and urges President Trump to reconsider this very divisive policy.
