The Maldives Police Service (MPS) have announced that there are investigating a judicial arrest warrant, which was reportedly issued against President Abdulla Yameen Yamin Abdul Gayooom on Sunday February 6.
The MPS have further alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed telephoned a senior member of the security services encouraging him to arrest the President.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has received a large dossier of evidence implicating President Yameen, amongst other things, in corruption and money laundering amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Furthermore, the media has revealed that President Yameen has been consulting a Sri Lankan practitioner of black magic before taking political decisions. The issue of concocting black magic is categorically forbidden in Islam
In a situation where the President is obstructing the MPS and others from completing a proper investigation into these serious allegations, it is appropriate for the President to be taken into custody so that the investigation can proceed.
On Sunday 6 February, President Nasheed was informed that a judicial arrest warrant had been issued against President Yameen. President Nasheed telephoned Brigadier General Zakariya Mansoor of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and advised him to follow the laws and the Constitution of the country.
President Nasheed is deeply concerned about the situation in the Maldives. President Nasheed calls on the MPS to uphold the law, and not to attempt to cover up evidence of President Yameen’s involvement in corruption, money laundering, terrorist financing and black magic.
