The High Court yesterday informed President Nasheed of a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 9 September at 2pm to determine if it would hear the appeal of President Nasheed’s verdict filed by the Prosecutor General.
This hearing has been scheduled abruptly by the High Court despite a request by President Nasheed earlier this week to have access to the case documents filed by the Prosecutor General and time to consult his legal counsel. The High Court denied that request yesterday.
The denial of access to the case documents on an appeal of his verdict and adequate time to discuss with his counsel before the preliminary hearing is a restriction of President Nasheed’s constitutionally stipulated right to counsel.
