MDP Congratulates the UNP-led government

The Maldivian Democratic Party congratulates the people of Sri Lanka and the UNP-led government on their strong victory in yesterday’s General Election.

It is encouraging to see the confidence put in a fellow conservative government by the people of Sri Lanka. The MDP is confident of the resumption of stalled reforms pushing for restoration of democracy by the new parliament.

Yesterday’s peaceful, free and fair election is a strong indication of the consolidation of democracy in Sri Lanka. MDP welcomes the continued efforts by President Maithiripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe together with with the international community to ensure the success of much needed reforms for the country including improvement in press freedom and human rights.

The MDP is comforted by the non-aligned foreign policy promoted by President Sirisena and wishes to engage with our sister parties in the region to continue to foster Indian Ocean security and stability.

MDP Spokesperson Hamid Abdul Ghafoor said: “Sri Lanka once again proves they are committed to the rule of law and the will of the people. I welcome the most peaceful election held in the country’s history”
