Prime Minister Cameron calls for President Nasheed’s Release

Prime Minister David Cameron has called for the release of President Nasheed and all other political prisoners in the Maldives.

In a tweet from the Prime Minister’s official Number 10 Downing Street account, David Cameron said: “Good to meet with wife of former #Maldives President. There needs to be political dialogue, release of Nasheed and all political prisoners.”

The Prime Minister’s call for Nasheed’s release followed a meeting on Wednesday with Madam Laila Ali and her legal counsel, Amal Clooney.

In their discussions with Prime Minister Cameron, Madam Laila Ali and Amal Clooney raised the issue President Nasheed’s unlawful detention and the on going political crisis in the Maldives.

Laila Ali and Amal Clooney’s other meetings on Wednesday also included Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister of State, Hugo Swire, as well as senior British parliamentarians and officials.
