MDP Condemns Abductions of Young People by Extremist Vigilantes

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) strongly condemns and expresses its deepest concerns over the recent abduction of several young people in Male’ by extremist, vigilante groups.

The MDP has been informed that the vigilante groups are operating alongside street gangs in Male’.

According to sources, the groups have been abducting a number of young men, and taking them to isolated locations, blindfolded. The hostages were intimidated with sharp weapons and were threatened with death if authorities were informed of the abduction. The sources informed the MDP that the hostages were interrogated on the strength of their Islamic faith.

The MDP calls on the Government to immediately crack down on these abductions, which spread fear amongst the general public, undermine law and order and damage the Maldives’ reputation.
