President Nasheed Meets the UN Resident Coordinator

President Mohamed Nasheed met the United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr Tony Lisle today. The meeting took place this afternoon at the UN office in Male’.

Discussions with the senior UN officials focused mainly on the presidential election scheduled for September 7 and the importance of ensuring that the election is conducted peacefully. A process for the peaceful transfer of power after announcement of the result was also discussed. President Nasheed expressed concern with the possible actions of the coup perpetrators in the wake of the election.

President Nasheed also expressed concern with the failure to implement recommendations in the report of the Commission of National Inquiry that was formed to investigate the overthrow of the government on February 7, 2012. President Nasheed appealed for international organisations to make further inquiries and to urge the government to implement the CoNI report.

In addition, the on-going political turmoil in Egypt as well as the adverse effects of climate change in the Maldives was also discussed. President Nasheed said that an early election was necessary to establish a democratic government in Egypt.

Machangoalhi North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, Henveiru South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla and MDP Deputy Chairperson Ali Shiyam accompanied President Nasheed at the meeting.
