Arrest Threats Remain High for President Nasheed – MDP

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains extremely concerned for the safety of President Mohamed Nasheed and firmly believes if the regime doesn’t arrest Nasheed today, they will no doubt try another day.

“Waheed’s regime cannot be trusted. They have already gone to extraordinary lengths to try and prevent President Nasheed from standing in the elections, as witnessed by this sham trial. Moment he leaves the High Commission, they could work with their friends in the judiciary and sentence him only to invalidate his candidacy” said Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, MDP Spokesperson.

They are determined to knock Nasheed out of the presidential elections because they know he enjoys tremendous popular support and will win” Ghafoor added.

Dr.Waheed has presided over an administration that has been widely criticised by Amnesty International, Reporters without Borders, the UN Human Rights committee, and Freedom House for perpetrating widespread human rights abuses.

The international community must ensure free and fair elections are held in which all candidates are freely permitted to stand.
