17April 2012

The Maldivian Democratic Party welcomes the statement on the Maldives issued by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) following their meeting on Monday, 16th April.

The MDP has always maintained the need to review the composition of the inquiry commission into the 7th February coup and welcomes the CMAG statement for reiterating the need for the commission to be ‘genuinely independent, credible and impartial.’ The MDP also highlight the CMAG’s encouragement of the all Party talks as a forum to cover ‘all issues that divide the stakeholders in the Maldives.’ The MDP hopes that Dr. Waheed’s regime will take CMAG’s recommendations under serious consideration and take all necessary steps to remedy the situation within the next few days.

The MDP believes that is in the best interest of the Maldives to work closely with the international community during the current political crisis. The MDP thanks CMAG and other international partners for their continued support to the restoration of democracy in the Maldives.
