MDP PRESS STATEMENT: President Nasheed to meet with US State Department Officials

President Mohamed Nasheed, currently in the United States of America to promote the release of the documentary, “The Island President”, will be travelling to Washington DC on Friday, 30 March to meet with officials of the US State Department.


The Maldivian Democratic Party welcomes the statement by the US State Department, and reiterates the US’ sentiments on ‘enjoying excellent relations’ between the US and President Nasheed’s MDP led administration. President Nasheed will be meeting with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and other officials from the Department while in Washington.


President Nasheed will speak to US state department officials on the issues of climate change, and the current political crisis in the Maldives. On climate change, President Nasheed will highlight the need for a positive narrative, by asking countries to provide renewable energy and to significantly increase investments in renewable energy.


On the issue of the Maldives current political crisis, President Nasheed will raise the importance of US support for an independent investigation with strong international presence into the coup d’etat of 7, February 2012, an early election, and the need for peaceful political activity.
