The Maldivian Democratic Party strongly condemns the recent killing of over a 100 Palestinians in Gaza by Israeli Defence Forces, as they sought humanitarian aid. This incident, the latest in a string of gruesome attacks on the besieged people of Gaza is another blatant demonstration of Israel’s systematic violation of international law and disregard for human rights.
Israel’s indiscriminate use of force, bombardment and withholding of essential humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip have led to over 30,000 deaths, thousands of injured and the occupied population of over 2 million people being mere steps away from starvation. This is in direct contravention to the International Court of Justice’s order to Israel on January 26, 204 “to take all measures within its power to prevent breaches of the Genocide Convention” and to “take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian aid,”.
With the Holy month of Ramadan just days away, the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire is even more urgent. MDP calls upon the international community to hold Israel accountable for its violations, and requests all nations licensing arms to Israel to cease with immediate effect. The rapid mobilisation and facilitation of life saving humanitarian aid into Gaza must be given priority.
The MDP stands firmly with the people of Palestine.
