The Maldives Democratic Party welcomes the recent statement by the Embassy of China refuting the holding of discussions with the Government of Maldives regarding the establishment of a military facility in the Maldives.

As China expands its investments in primary markets, becoming increasingly reliant on foreign oil & energy, it has gradually sought to protect those interests with military facilities. This is the pattern of behaviour practiced by all great powers, as observed by Maldivian rulers throughout its history.

MDP notes with interest that in December 2011, the Chinese Defense Ministry announced in Seychelles that its naval fleet may seek supplies or recuperate at appropriate harbours in Seychelles or other countries as needed during escort missions.

It is with this backdrop in mind that MDP expressed concern about the recent bilateral deliberations between the Governments of Maldives and China on the possible establishment of such a supply or a recuperate facility in Laamu Atoll.

Nevertheless, MDP is greatly encouraged by the statement issued by China on Saturday, that the Government of China has no intention of establishing such a facility in the Maldives.
