The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has elected Mr. Abdulla Shahid as the president of the party. Mr Abdulla Shahid served as the foreign Minister in MDP Government from 17 november 2018 to 16 November 2023. He was the speaker of Parliament from 28 May 2009 to 28 May 2014.

Deputy Chairperson (Admin) Mr. Ibrahim Waheeed, Deputy Chairperson (Finance) Mr. Ahmed Abdulla’s term started today. Mr. Waheed and Abdulla have served the National Council of party since its formation. Mr. Waheed has been a member and chair of the Election Committee since 2005. Mr. Waheed first elected as the constituency president for Alif Alif atoll in 2005 and Nolhivaram Constituency in 2009 and 2014. He was the province president for Upper North province from 2021.   Mr. Abdulla first elected as the constituency president for Haa Alif atoll in 2005 and Baarah constituency in 2009 and 2014. He has been a members of Parliament from 28 May 2009 to 28 May 2014 and 28 May 2019 to 28 May 2024.

Elected Deputy Chairperson’s term started

The conference is being held in Kulhudhuffushi City with Councillors from our 3 Northernmost atolls, WDC members, Party leadership. 55 Councillors from Bodu Thiladhunmathi are present along with Mayors from 5 cities. The event aims to discuss the powers guaranteed to Councils under the Decentralisation Act, and achievements ushered in by MDP’s legislation. With further discussions as to how Councils’ administrative capacities can be expanded and strengthened. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, Former Vice President Faisal Naseem and other senior members from the Party leadership are attending the event. A declaration will be signed and published by the Councillors attending the event, with a collective call to the Government addressing potential reforms.

The Maldivian Democratic Party calls on the international community to enforce the ICJ ruling to halt Israel’s military offensive in Rafah, and allow humanitarian aid into city. The ruling reaffirms the urgency with which international bodies must act to stop Israel’s genocide in Palestine. Despite the mounting pressure, Israel has continued to perpetrate unimaginable atrocities against the Palestinian people. This disregard for international rule-of-law threatens the security of the entire region and beyond. The rights of Palestinian people have been ignored for too long. Countries and international organisations must seize this opportunity to voice their condemnation of Israel, and unite to enforce the ICJ’s ruling. We pray to Almighty Allah for an end to the suffering of Palestinians, and justice for all they have endured.

MDP calls to enforce the ICJ ruling against Israel

Attorney General announced he has ordered the police and the military not to follow rulings issued by the Supreme Court. In a hastily arranged press conference in Male’ early this morning, Attorney-General Mohamed Anil (flanked by the Chief of Defense, General Shiyam, and the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz) effectively declared himself the chief judicial authority in the Maldives and ordered the police and the military not to follow rulings issued by the Supreme Court. This represents an unconstitutional, highly illegal, and dangerous attempt by the Attorney General and President Yameen to usurp the powers of the judiciary. AG Anil said he had reports that the Supreme Court would rule today that President Yameen can not longer hold office, following the president’s refusal to comply with Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of 9 political prisoners and the reinstatement of 12 opposition MPs. Anil further said that as the Attorney General, under 133 of the Constitution he has the legal mandate to advise on all legal matters. “[I] will not accept an order from the Supreme Court to remove President Yameen from power. The AG said the Supreme Court is about to rule on Yameen, and that such a ruling would be a national security threat, and hence he would not allow for its implementation. The Chief of Defense and the Police Commissioner said they will not uphold the Supreme Court rulings, and will follow the Attorney General’s instructions. The Chief of Defense saying the military will obey the AG’s instructions, when President is the Commander in Chief is alarming, and unprecedented. Police attempt arrest of Chief Justice and Judicial Administrator at the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) of the Supreme Court Protesters and Police clashed outside the home of the Chief Justice late last night, amidst reports that the Police were attempting to arrest the Chief Justice. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Police barged into the Department of Judicial Administration’s Chief Administrator, Hassan Saeed’s home, in an attempt to arrest him. However, Saeed was not at home. A police statement following the raid, said the Police are searching for him, under allegations of bribery on a housing project. The Police further said they had evidence that family members of the Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed are involved in bribery. The police claimed to have a court warrant for Saeed’s arrest, but have not shown the warrant to the public. The Department of Judicial Administration oversees the administrative work of the Supreme Court and all other courts. Police have now launched a manhunt for DJA head Saeed. The manhunt for the Judicial Administrator, based on a hitherto unheard of, old corruption case, linking to family members of the chief justices is evidence of President Yameen’s attempts to intimidate the judges. The arrest attempt and intimidation follows the apex court’s ruling, ordering the release of political prisoners, and the reinstatement of 12 opposition lawmakers. The police bribery witch-hunt bypasses the mandate of the Anti- Corruption Commission. On 31 January, the Police arrested the IT head of the DJA, hours before the Supreme Court ruling. On January 28, all the leaders of the opposition, together, petitioned the Supreme Court to remove President Abdulla Yameen from office, to rule that he has broken the law and is unfit for office. The intimidation of the Supreme Justices, with the highly irregular statement made by the Attorney General defying the Supreme Court, supported by the two chiefs of the security forces, is tantamount to the effective sidelining of the judiciary and in direct contravention of the Constitution. Maldivians are fearful that President Yameen is about to order a full military takeover of the country, in an attempt to ensure he is not removed from office.

The MDP remains deeply troubled by President Muizzu’s rushed pursuit of reshaping the constitutional order to concentrate political power to himself. The President has proposed amending the Constitution to synchronise Presidential and Parliamentary elections, a change that would remove the public’s ability to hold the government accountable during its five-year term. The Government used its dominant majority in Parliament to rush through a decision to hold a referendum on this amendment. The manner was telling: the amendment received just five minutes of scrutiny in the parliamentary committee and only two hours of debate on the parliament floor, with no substantive discussion whatsoever. The referendum on this monumental change is due to take place on April 4th.  The Government’s justification for this constitutional change has swung between claims of minimal cost savings and the assertion that synchronised elections would institute social harmony because “elections cause division within the public.” This constitutional change and its weak economic justification do not withstand scrutiny. More alarming is how it is being done: rather than through inclusive national consultation, the administration has chosen to merge this fundamental question with the local council elections on 4th April, with voters given no structured information and no serious opportunity to understand what is being asked of them. The Elections Commission, in its discussions with the MDP, shared that it has not been able to create the required public awareness as mandated by law. Meanwhile the public broadcaster, Public Service Maldives, mandated to educate the public on matters of national interest and to offer both sides an equal opportunity, have consistently failed to afford ‘No’ campaign the same platform as the Government backed campaign in support of constitutional change.   These actions by the Government must also be understood within the broader pattern of an administration that has systematically centralised power, weaponised state institutions against opposition members, and shown consistent contempt for the rule of law. The proposed amendment is not a technocratic efficiency measure; it is the latest move in an ongoing project to entrench executive dominance and hollow out the checks and balances the Maldivian people fought hard to enshrine in their constitution. MDP Condemns Government for Rushing Referendum on Constitutional Reform

The Maldivian Democratic Party expresses grave concern over the escalating war in the Middle East and its devastating impact on the people of the region and consequences for global stability, including direct implications for global oil markets, tourism and the Maldivian economy. The domestic situation is not helped by President Muizzu’s preoccupation with centralising power through a rushed constitutional referendum than with preparing the country for the economic consequences of rising oil prices. Last week, President Muizzu sought to placate the public by declaring there was “nothing to worry about.” Just 48 hours later, fuel prices were increased by 20 percent. The Government’s subsequent official request for urgent fuel assistance from India further underscored the seriousness of the situation and undermined the President’s earlier assurances. The MDP expresses its deep gratitude to the Government and people of India for their continued support to the Maldives.  While countries across our region put in place policies to mitigate the impact of the fuel crisis, the lack of Government transparency and engagement with all relevant stakeholders has been alarming. The Maldivian people deserve a government that confronts the crises of the day, not one that exploits them to consolidate power.

When women rise, our democracy grows stronger. The Maldivian Democratic Party has been at the forefront of advancing women’s rights and political participation in the Maldives. Through our policies and reforms, we have worked to translate commitment into real change. The introduction of the 33% quota for women in local councils was a historic step that ensured women’s voices are represented in local governance across the country. We also strengthened Women’s Development Committees, recognizing them as essential institutions in island communities. By expanding their mandate and providing greater support for their initiatives, we created pathways for women to participate in community leadership, economic development, and social progress. These achievements reflect our belief that empowering women is not symbolic—it is fundamental to building a fair and inclusive society. Yet our work is far from over. Women in the Maldives still face barriers in political representation, economic opportunity, and leadership. In coordination with the Women’s Wing of the Maldivian Democratic Party, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking these barriers and ensuring that every woman and girl can participate fully and equally in shaping the future of our nation.
