The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has elected Mr. Abdulla Shahid as the president of the party. Mr Abdulla Shahid served as the foreign Minister in MDP Government from 17 november 2018 to 16 November 2023. He was the speaker of Parliament from 28 May 2009 to 28 May 2014.

Deputy Chairperson (Admin) Mr. Ibrahim Waheeed, Deputy Chairperson (Finance) Mr. Ahmed Abdulla’s term started today. Mr. Waheed and Abdulla have served the National Council of party since its formation. Mr. Waheed has been a member and chair of the Election Committee since 2005. Mr. Waheed first elected as the constituency president for Alif Alif atoll in 2005 and Nolhivaram Constituency in 2009 and 2014. He was the province president for Upper North province from 2021.   Mr. Abdulla first elected as the constituency president for Haa Alif atoll in 2005 and Baarah constituency in 2009 and 2014. He has been a members of Parliament from 28 May 2009 to 28 May 2014 and 28 May 2019 to 28 May 2024.

Elected Deputy Chairperson’s term started

The conference is being held in Kulhudhuffushi City with Councillors from our 3 Northernmost atolls, WDC members, Party leadership. 55 Councillors from Bodu Thiladhunmathi are present along with Mayors from 5 cities. The event aims to discuss the powers guaranteed to Councils under the Decentralisation Act, and achievements ushered in by MDP’s legislation. With further discussions as to how Councils’ administrative capacities can be expanded and strengthened. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, Former Vice President Faisal Naseem and other senior members from the Party leadership are attending the event. A declaration will be signed and published by the Councillors attending the event, with a collective call to the Government addressing potential reforms.

The Maldivian Democratic Party calls on the international community to enforce the ICJ ruling to halt Israel’s military offensive in Rafah, and allow humanitarian aid into city. The ruling reaffirms the urgency with which international bodies must act to stop Israel’s genocide in Palestine. Despite the mounting pressure, Israel has continued to perpetrate unimaginable atrocities against the Palestinian people. This disregard for international rule-of-law threatens the security of the entire region and beyond. The rights of Palestinian people have been ignored for too long. Countries and international organisations must seize this opportunity to voice their condemnation of Israel, and unite to enforce the ICJ’s ruling. We pray to Almighty Allah for an end to the suffering of Palestinians, and justice for all they have endured.

MDP calls to enforce the ICJ ruling against Israel

Attorney General announced he has ordered the police and the military not to follow rulings issued by the Supreme Court. In a hastily arranged press conference in Male’ early this morning, Attorney-General Mohamed Anil (flanked by the Chief of Defense, General Shiyam, and the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz) effectively declared himself the chief judicial authority in the Maldives and ordered the police and the military not to follow rulings issued by the Supreme Court. This represents an unconstitutional, highly illegal, and dangerous attempt by the Attorney General and President Yameen to usurp the powers of the judiciary. AG Anil said he had reports that the Supreme Court would rule today that President Yameen can not longer hold office, following the president’s refusal to comply with Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of 9 political prisoners and the reinstatement of 12 opposition MPs. Anil further said that as the Attorney General, under 133 of the Constitution he has the legal mandate to advise on all legal matters. “[I] will not accept an order from the Supreme Court to remove President Yameen from power. The AG said the Supreme Court is about to rule on Yameen, and that such a ruling would be a national security threat, and hence he would not allow for its implementation. The Chief of Defense and the Police Commissioner said they will not uphold the Supreme Court rulings, and will follow the Attorney General’s instructions. The Chief of Defense saying the military will obey the AG’s instructions, when President is the Commander in Chief is alarming, and unprecedented. Police attempt arrest of Chief Justice and Judicial Administrator at the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) of the Supreme Court Protesters and Police clashed outside the home of the Chief Justice late last night, amidst reports that the Police were attempting to arrest the Chief Justice. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Police barged into the Department of Judicial Administration’s Chief Administrator, Hassan Saeed’s home, in an attempt to arrest him. However, Saeed was not at home. A police statement following the raid, said the Police are searching for him, under allegations of bribery on a housing project. The Police further said they had evidence that family members of the Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed are involved in bribery. The police claimed to have a court warrant for Saeed’s arrest, but have not shown the warrant to the public. The Department of Judicial Administration oversees the administrative work of the Supreme Court and all other courts. Police have now launched a manhunt for DJA head Saeed. The manhunt for the Judicial Administrator, based on a hitherto unheard of, old corruption case, linking to family members of the chief justices is evidence of President Yameen’s attempts to intimidate the judges. The arrest attempt and intimidation follows the apex court’s ruling, ordering the release of political prisoners, and the reinstatement of 12 opposition lawmakers. The police bribery witch-hunt bypasses the mandate of the Anti- Corruption Commission. On 31 January, the Police arrested the IT head of the DJA, hours before the Supreme Court ruling. On January 28, all the leaders of the opposition, together, petitioned the Supreme Court to remove President Abdulla Yameen from office, to rule that he has broken the law and is unfit for office. The intimidation of the Supreme Justices, with the highly irregular statement made by the Attorney General defying the Supreme Court, supported by the two chiefs of the security forces, is tantamount to the effective sidelining of the judiciary and in direct contravention of the Constitution. Maldivians are fearful that President Yameen is about to order a full military takeover of the country, in an attempt to ensure he is not removed from office.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) strongly condemns the violent dispersal of peaceful protesters in Malé on Friday night, and the indiscriminate arrests carried out by the Muizzu administration. Although 13 have been reported to be arrested, the Police has not verified the details of the arrests. Those arrested include two former Members of Parliament and the sitting President of Maafushi Council. Those under police detention have not yet had any access to lawyers. In one shocking incident, MDP Constituency Vice President Mohamed Raslaan suffered a heart attack after being exposed to pepper spray at close range and subjected to Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs). The use of LRADs is unprecedented in the Maldives and poses serious risks of permanent hearing damage, dizziness, nausea, and other severe health impacts. These events highlight the rapid erosion of democracy in the Maldives. Under President Muizzu, the government has increasingly resorted to authoritarian tactics—undermining judicial independence, silencing the media, and now deploying dangerous weapons against citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly. This crackdown comes at a time when Maldivians are already grappling with a deepening economic crisis, rising debt, and growing discontent with the government. The MDP calls for the immediate release of all those arrested and demands accountability for the use of excessive force. We urge the international community to act swiftly and pressure the Muizzu administration to end this brutality and uphold the democratic rights and freedoms of the Maldivian people.

Dangerous New Escalation: MDP Condemns Use of LRADs and Indiscriminate Arrests

We unequivocally condemn the violent assault on the public and the brutal use of excessive force against peaceful civilians during the demonstration. As thousands of people have taken to the streets calling for the resignation of President Muizzu, police are obstructing their right to peacefully demonstrate. Several protesters have already sustained serious injuries due to the police’s indiscriminate use of pepper spray and riot shields against protesters and journalists, while reporters broadcasting live have been forcibly ordered to leave the scene. More than 6 arrests have been confirmed at the time of writing, and the MDP demands the immediate release of party members and all members of the public that have been arrested by the police. While the exact number of arrests and identities are uncertain, the party demands the unconditional release of all protesters engaging in their constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression. These actions are not law enforcement. Rather, they are deliberate violations of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Maldivian constitution, an attack on press freedom, and a blatant attempt to silence the people. Such abuses of power are intolerable and must be held accountable.

Condemnation of Violent Arrests and Brutal Attempts to Disrupt October 3rd Rally

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) strongly condemns the statement issued by Maldives Police Service (MPS) signalling their intention to disrupt ‘Lootuvaifi Lootuvaifi’ event scheduled for the 3rd of October, 2025, and attempts by the Muizzu’s administration to disrupt the peaceful political action through paid criminal actors. The MDP assures all authorities and participants that the event is a peaceful political rally, and that claims made by the MPS suggesting otherwise are deliberate attempts at disrupting the rally using gross misinformation tactics. The Muizzu administration's willingness to lie to the public has been an ever-present feature of the regime, and the police’s willingness to further these claims are only further evidence of a need for the protests. We regret that these tactics are a clear means of deflecting attention away from reports highlighting the administration’s intent to use external criminal actors to create violence at the event regarding which a complaint has been lodged by the MDP at the Maldives Police Services, highlighting links between the PNC and criminal organizations and the demonstrated intent of the Muizzu administration to harm protesters. The party asks that the MPS stay committed to their duty to protect the public, and to uphold the constitutional right to free expression and protest by ensuring that no external disruptions are allowed at the rally. Representatives from the MDP met with the MPS on September 28th to share information on the event scheduled for 3rd October, with further documentation submitted in writing as needed. The MDP reiterates that the rally will proceed as discussed at the meeting. The police’s actions are only the latest in a long list of actions that highlight the rapidly eroding democratic freedoms in our country, and showcase president Muizzu’s alarming willingness to subvert our democratic institutions for his own gain. With our parliament and judiciary firmly under his thumb, and our “independent” institutions used only to further the president’s autocratic agenda, the only remaining recourse is for our people to engage in direct action and demonstration. We call on the people of the country to join these peaceful protests at a moment where our country appears on the verge of descending once again into totalitarian dictatorship, as president Muizzu continues his blatantly unconstitutional consolidation of power.
