Statement by the MDP on the Passing Away of Sir James Richard Mancham, Former President of Seychelles

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is deeply saddened by the passing away of His Excellency Sir James Richard Mancham, founding President of the Republic of Seychelles. President Sir James Mancham was a much-loved statesman, and a true advocate of national reconciliation and unity for the Republic of Seychelles.

President Sir James Mancham offered his experience in building Seychelles and lent that experience to the Maldivian people. We the MDP would like to recall President Sir James Mancham’s invaluable assistance to this country and party at a time when we Maldivians were struggling for our freedoms and liberties. Sir James was one of the first champions of democracy for the Maldives, and stood by the Maldivian people and this party throughout our democratisation process, building political pluralism and building this party. He was a firm advocate of human rights, not just in Seychelles, but also for the Maldives.

His loss will be deeply felt and mourned not only by the people of Seychelles but throughout the Indian Ocean region and across the world. At this time of national grief, the MDP extends our deepest condolences to his bereaved family, to the Government and the people of Seychelles.
