MDP Statement on the Death of MP Jo Cox

The Maldivian Democratic Party is deeply saddened by the brutal murder of U.K MP, Jo Cox.

Jo Cox’s departure is a loss, not just to the United Kingdom, but to the world. She represented the kind of embracing, empathetic and forward- looking leadership this Party has always believed in, and that the world is so much in need of right now.

Jo Cox’s charity work, her idealism and her contribution in bridging the gap between people marked her out as a public official of compassion and humanity, and the world will feel the loss.

The MDP would like to extend its sincerest condolences to the loving husband and two young children Jo leaves behind.

This brutal attack on Jo Cox, a Member of Parliament, cannot be viewed as separated from an attack on her politics and ideals. The MDP expresses hope that this horrifying and evil action will remind people and especially public officials that hate- mongering, dog whistle and ugly politics should not have a place in public discourse.
